I have problems with the starter on my 1994 model Ford 6640 (8900
hours).
The symptoms are:

- usually starts very fine
- sometimes (now mor often) the starter does not turn when the key is
fully turned
- when starter fails, there is a small 'click' and sometimes a larger
'click' from the starter
as the key is fully turned
- if I rock the tractor when it's in gear, the starter usually works

Anyone experienced the same problem? Do I have to change the whole
starter, or
can I repair it? I suppose the transmission neutral swith is not defect
due to the
'click' from the starter.

The batteries are by the way fine - it starts like a snap when it first
engages.

It sounds, offfhand, like you have a bendix that jams. It could be that
there's a bad spot on the commutator. Either requires removal and rework
of the starter. If you're in farm country there should be a local shop
that will do the repair for you for less than a replacement costs. Ask
around, they generally don't advertise. Often an auto parts store will
have their own little machine shop which will service starters,
generators, and alternators.

It wouldn't hurt to check the battery connections and the heavy
cable connections on the starter. Take the cables off the battery no
matter how good they look and clean them.
You might try Ebay for an owner's manual for your tractor. It
might be a few bucks cheaper than the dealership. The real old tractor
manuals my dad had would almost tell you how to overhaul the thing.
They had pictures instead of those crappy drawings one sees in parts
manuals of more recent vintage.

Thanks!

I have cleaned the battery connections and the cables connected to the
battery with sandpaper, but will do the cables on the starter as well.
